Beavis and Barrel-Head is an American developed blithe comedy television receiver serial created by Mike Judge.[two] The series follows the eponymous Beavis and Barrel-Head, both voiced by Judge, a pair of teenage slackers characterized by their apathy, lack of intelligence, lowbrow humor, and failure to attract women.

The characters originated in Approximate's 1992 short picture Frog Baseball, which was broadcast by MTV's animation showcase Liquid Television. Afterward MTV commissioned a total series around the characters, Beavis and Barrel-Head ran for seven seasons from March viii, 1993, to November 28, 1997.[3] [4] The series was revived with an eighth season airing on MTV from October 27, 2011, to Dec 29, 2011, but was cancelled a 2nd time following the flavor's conclusion. A second revival consisting of two seasons is scheduled to air on Paramount+.[5] [six]

During its initial run, Beavis and Butt-Caput received widespread critical acclaim for its satirical, scathing commentary on society. The show's popularity spawned diverse related media, including the theatrical film Beavis and Butt-Head Do America in 1996. A 2nd film has also been appear to be released in July 2022 on the streaming service Paramount+.[7]

Premise [edit]

The series centers on ii unintelligent teenage delinquent couch potatoes named Beavis and Butt-Head (both voiced past Judge) who lack social skills. They nourish school at Highland Loftier in a boondocks named Highland, located somewhere in Texas or New United mexican states. If they are not at school or out causing mayhem, they're at dwelling house watching TV, looking at pornographic magazines, or eating nachos and other junk food. Beavis and Butt-Head accept little to no developed supervision and are barely literate. Both lack whatever empathy or moral scruples fifty-fifty when regarding each other, and accept no hesitance to inflict serious physical harm to each other. They will usually deem an experience "cool" if it somehow involves heavy metal, violence, sexual practice, devastation, or the macabre. While inexperienced with women, they share an obsession with sexual practice and tend to cackle whenever they hear words or phrases that could be fifty-fifty vaguely interpreted as sexual or scatological. Butt-Head tends to be very emotionless and lackadaisical with regard to his deport, whereas Beavis tends to exist more than "over-the-peak" and extroverted (he is also shown to be somewhat more than aware of social norms and sure morals than Butt-Head is, though Barrel-Head seems to be somewhat more intelligent at reading and planning alee).

Each episode features frequent interstitial scenes in which they critique music videos using commentary improvised by Judge (much in the same way as Mystery Scientific discipline Theater 3000; in season viii, they also commented on clips from other MTV shows such as Jersey Shore and True Life, plus shows from other Viacom-owned networks such every bit Spike). The remainder of the episodes depict the duo embarking on diverse schemes or adventures.[eight] [9] The staff at Highland High are often at a loss as to how to deal with them, and, in many episodes, Beavis and Butt-Caput skip school birthday. Their actions sometimes result in serious consequences (sometimes for themselves but ofttimes for others), for which they themselves do non limited any remorse due to being also stupid to sympathise that their actions take caused serious problems.

Episodes [edit]

Reception [edit]

Beavis and Butt-Head are then stupid and sublimely self-absorbed that the outside world has little reality except equally an badgerer or distraction. It would be like shooting fish in a barrel to attack B&B every bit ignorant, vulgar, depraved, repulsive slobs. Of course they are. Simply that would miss the point, which is that Mike Judge'southward characters reflect parts of the society that produced them. To study B&B is to learn about a culture of narcissism, breach, functional illiteracy, instant gratification and tv set zombiehood.

— Roger Ebert (1996)[ten]

Over its run, Beavis and Butt-Head received both positive and negative reactions from the public with its combination of lewd humor and implied criticism of society.[11] It became the focus of criticism from some social critics such as Michael Medved, while others such as David Letterman and the National Review dedicated it as a cleverly destructive vehicle for social criticism and a particularly artistic and intelligent one-act. Either way, the testify captured the attention of many young television viewers and is often considered a classic slice of 1990s youth civilisation and Generation 10. Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of South Park, cite the series equally an influence and compared it to the blues.[12]

In 1997, Dan Tobin of The Boston Phoenix commented on the series' humor, maxim information technology transformed "stupidity into a crusade, forcing us to admit how little it actually takes to make u.s.a. laugh."[13] In 1997, Ted Drozdowski of The Boston Phoenix described the 1997 Beavis and Butt-Head state as "reduced to cocky-parody of their self-parody."[fourteen] In December 2005, Telly Guide ranked the duo'southward singled-out laughing at #66 on their list of the 100 Greatest Idiot box Quotes and Catchphrases.[15] In 2012, Tv set Guide ranked Beavis and Barrel-Head every bit i of the top 60 Greatest Television receiver Cartoons of All Time.[sixteen]

Mike Judge himself is highly disquisitional of the blitheness and quality of earlier episodes, in particular the first ii—"Give Blood/Claret Drive" and "Door to Door"—which he described every bit "atrocious, I don't know why anybody liked it... I was burying my caput in the sand."[17]

Controversy [edit]

The show was blamed for the death of two-year-old Jessica Matthews in Moraine, Ohio, in Oct 1993. The daughter's five-year-erstwhile brother, Austin Messner, prepare fire to his mother'south mobile home with a cigarette lighter, killing the two-year-old.[18] The mother later claimed that her son watched an episode in which the characters said "burn down was fun".[18] However, the neighbors stated that the family did non even have cable television and would thus be unable to view the bear witness.[19] [20]

Every bit a event, all references to burn down were removed from subsequent airings and prompted the testify to a subsequently time slot.[21] The creators plant a censorship loophole and took delight in sometimes making Beavis scream things that sounded very similar to his previous "Burn down! Fire!" (such as "Fryer! Fryer!" when he and Barrel-Head are working the late shift at Burger World) and also having him well-nigh say the forbidden give-and-take (such as once when he sang "Liar, liar, pants on..." and pausing earlier "fire"). There was likewise a music video where a man runs on burn in slow motion ("California" by Wax). Beavis is hypnotized by it and can barely say "fire". However, MTV eventually removed the episode entirely. References to fire were cutting from earlier episodes—even the original main tapes were contradistinct permanently.[22] Other episodes MTV opted not to rerun included "Stewart'southward Firm" and "Way Down Mexico Manner". Copies of early episodes with the controversial content intact are rare, and the copies that exist are made from home video recordings of the original broadcasts, typically on VCR. In an interview included with the Mike Judge Collection DVD set, Estimate said he is uncertain whether some of the earlier episodes still exist in their original, uncensored grade.[21]

When the serial returned in 2011, MTV allowed Beavis to use the discussion "burn" once again uncensored.[23] During the first video segment, "Werewolves of Highland", the first new episode of the revival, Beavis utters the discussion "fire" a total of 7 times within 28 seconds, with Butt-Head saying it in one case as well.[24]

In Feb 1994, watchdog group Morality in Media claimed that the death of eight-month-quondam Natalia Rivera, struck by a bowling ball thrown from an overpass onto a highway in Jersey Metropolis, New Bailiwick of jersey, almost the Kingdom of the netherlands Tunnel by 18-twelvemonth-erstwhile Calvin J. Settle, was partially inspired by Beavis and Butt-Head.[25] The group said that Settle was influenced by the episode "Ball Breakers", in which Beavis and Barrel-Head load a bowling ball with explosives and drib it from a rooftop.[25] While Morality in Media claimed that the show inspired Settle's actions, the example'due south prosecutors did not. It was later revealed by both prosecutors and the defendant that Settle did not have cable TV, nor did he watch the show.

In "Lightning Strikes", the show parodies the desire to blame things on youth civilization. When a reporter asks the duo why they had been flying a kite in a thunderstorm, they explain that they had been inspired by a documentary about "some old dude with long pilus and spectacles". The interview continues until they mention having watched rock music videos earlier in the day; the reporter concludes (on the air) that the videos are to blame for their actions.

MTV too responded by broadcasting the plan after eleven:00 p.m. and included a disclaimer, reminding viewers:

Beavis and Butt-Caput are not real. They are stupid cartoon people completely made up by this Texas guy whom we hardly even know. Beavis and Butt-Head are impaired, crude, thoughtless, ugly, sexist, cocky-destructive fools. But for some reason, the little wienerheads make us express mirth.

This was later changed to:

Beavis and Butt-Head are not role models. They're non even man. They're cartoons. Some of the things they do would cause a person to get injure, expelled, arrested, possibly deported. To put it another way: don't try this at home.

This disclaimer likewise appears before the opening of their Sega Genesis and Super NES games as well as their Windows game Beavis and Barrel-Head in Virtual Stupidity.[26]

They were famously lambasted by Autonomous South Carolina Senator Fritz Hollings as "Buffcoat and Beaver".[27] This afterward became a running gag on the show where adults mispronounced their names. For example, 1 grapheme on the show, Tom Anderson, originally chosen them "Butthole" and "Joe" and believed the two to be of Asian ethnicity (describing them to the police as "Oriental"). In later episodes, Anderson uses the Hollings mispronunciation once and, on at least one occasion, refers to them equally "Penis and Butt-Munch". President Clinton called them "Beavis and Bum-head" in "Citizen Butt-caput", too as in the pic, where an quondam lady (voiced past Cloris Leachman) consistently calls them "Travis" and "Bob-head". In "Incognito", when another pupil threatens to kill them, the duo uses this to their advantage, pretending to exist exchange students named "Crevis and Bung-Caput". The bang-up, seeing through the disguises, calls them "Beaver and Butt-Plug". In "Right On!", when the duo announced on the Gus Baker Evidence, host Gus Baker (a caricature of Rush Limbaugh) introduces them as "Beavis and Buffcoat".

Beavis and Barrel-Head have been compared to idiot savants because of their artistic and subversively intelligent observations of music videos. This part of the show was mostly improvised by Mike Judge. With regard to criticisms of the two as "idiots", Judge responded that a show virtually straight-A students would not be funny.

Film [edit]

Beavis and Butt-Head Do America (1996) [edit]

In 1996, a full-length pic featuring the duo titled Beavis and Butt-Head Do America was released in theaters by Paramount Pictures. The film features the voices of Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, Cloris Leachman, Robert Stack, Eric Bogosian, Richard Linklater, Greg Kinnear (in an uncredited role) and David Letterman (credited as Earl Hofert). It gained more often than not positive reviews from film critics and a "two thumbs upward" from Siskel and Ebert. The motion-picture show earned over $lx meg at the domestic box office, a strong render for a film that cost but $12 million to produce.[28]

Beavis and Barrel-Caput Do the Universe (2022) [edit]

In 2008, Judge stated, "I like to keep the door open on Beavis and Butt-Head, because it'southward my favorite thing that I've ever washed. It'south the matter I'm about proud of."[29] However, he stated his reservations regarding the "year and half [to] ii and a half years" that it would take "to do that right," saying that a revival project "comes upwardly every three years."[29] In 2009, while promoting his film Extract, Gauge said he would like to see the characters on the big screen again, and that "I kind of think of them as being either xv or in their 60s.... I wouldn't listen doing something with them as these 2 dirty old men sitting on the couch."[30]

In March 2018, Judge told Rotten Tomatoes that the thought of doing a 2d Beavis and Butt-Head movie had been brought upward ii months prior, saying "It'southward only a matter of coming up with an idea that feels similar it's worth doing."[31] In July 2019, Judge again reiterated interest in a potential movie, stating, "I've got some ideas. I think it would have to be something that makes it relevant today. I think I might've figured out a way to do that." He further stated that he would probably straight it.[32] [33]

On Feb 24, 2021, the Paramount+ streaming service announced a new movie based on the serial.[vii]

In Feb 2022, information technology was announced that the picture will exist released in July 2022 and would be titled Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe.

Possible live-action motion-picture show [edit]

In May 2008, Gauge stated that he previously hated the thought of producing a live-action moving picture, but had come to believe that "possibly there'due south something at that place."[34] He too revealed that Johnny Depp had expressed interest in the role of Beavis, having imitated the character while Marlon Brando imitated Butt-Caput during the production of Don Juan DeMarco (1995).[34] He as well stated in an interview that "Seann William Scott's kinda got Butt-Head optics."[35]

In 2016, Approximate told Radio Times "Mayhap information technology could be a alive-action someday", so went on to speculate that Beavis might exist homeless by at present.[36]

MTV Classic [edit]

On July 28, 2016, information technology was reported that VH1 Classic was to be rebranded equally MTV Classic on August i, 2022 on the 35th anniversary of the original MTV. With a focus on 1990s programming, Beavis and Butt-Head were a major part of this alongside Daria and Ɔon Flux at the launch; they were also a major focus in the promotion of the re-brand.[37] MTV Classic only broadcast episodes from the 2022 reboot. However, it and all not-music video programming only lasted a few months before being pulled.[38]

Revivals [edit]

Outset revival [edit]

On July fourteen, 2010, a spokesperson for MTV Networks informed a New York Post reporter that Mike Judge was creating a new Beavis and Butt-Head series, that Judge would reprise his voice-acting roles for the show, and that the animation would exist hand-drawn. According to TMZ, MTV had not asked Tracy Grandstaff to reprise her office every bit Daria Morgendorffer.[39] Later, in a Rolling Rock interview, Judge was asked if Daria was coming back, and he said: "No. There'south sort of a cameo in i episode. That'll be a surprise."[40]

Every bit in the old series, Beavis and Butt-Head are loftier school students who, among other things, criticize contemporary music videos.[41] In an interview with Rolling Rock, MTV president Van Toffler said the duo volition also scout Jersey Shore, Ultimate Fighting Championship matches, and apprentice videos from YouTube, as well equally requite movie reviews. "The biggest change is obviously the references are updated, it'south set in modern day, and there's going to be a picture review segment," Linn said, "Otherwise they're still true to their prior passions."[42] [43]

John Altschuler, formerly a writer for Rex of the Hill, told a Rolling Stone reporter that he saw signs that Mike Judge was thinking of reviving Beavis and Butt-Caput. On more than than 1 occasion, Estimate told the writers that ane of their ideas for an episode of King of the Hill would work well for Beavis and Butt-Head; eventually he concluded, "Peradventure we should just actually brand some practiced Beavis and Butt-Head episodes." Afterwards, a Lady Gaga video convinced Van Toffler of the tenability of a Beavis and Barrel-Caput revival: "I felt like there was a whole crop of new artists—and what the world sorely missed was the indicate of view that just Beavis and Butt-Head could bring."[42]

As part of a promotional campaign for the new serial, cinemas screening Jackass 3D opened the feature film with a 3-D Beavis and Butt-Caput short subject. Months after, in a media presentation on Feb 2, 2011, MTV appear that the series would premiere in mid-2011. The new episodes debuted in the U.s. and Canada on Oct 27, 2011. The premiere was dubbed a ratings hit with an audience of iii.three one thousand thousand total viewers.[46] This number eventually dwindled to 900,000 by the season'due south finish, mainly due to its challenging fourth dimension slot pitted confronting regular prime time shows on other networks.[47] From April 24, 2012, to May one, 2013, the show remained on the bubble for renewal, with no official conclusion being made.[48] According to Mike Judge, MTV'southward modern demographic are females 12–14 years old, and the network is looking for other networks to ship the show to.[49]

The main title card displays the championship every bit Mike Judge'due south Beavis and Butt-Caput with Approximate'due south proper noun replacing the MTV logo.

Comedy Central aired the prove as part of their animation block over Christmas in December 2022 only was non picked upwardly for a new flavor or syndication. This would exist the 2nd fourth dimension the show aired on Comedy Central, the beginning beingness between subsequent airings in 2004 and 2005.[fifty]

On Jan 10, 2014, Mike Judge announced that, while he is busy working on Silicon Valley, at that place is a hazard of his pitching Beavis and Butt-Caput to another network and that he would not heed making more than episodes.[51] While giving an interview to Howard Stern on May vi, 2014, Estimate mentioned that the testify's ratings on MTV were second only to Bailiwick of jersey Shore, but the show did not fit MTV'southward target demographic of young women, which is why the revived series has non been brought back on MTV. He also said that MTV was close to selling it to some other network, but it became "lost in bargain stuff".[52] : 37m

On July ane, 2020, Comedy Central announced information technology had ordered a second revival of the series consisting of two new seasons forth with spin-offs and specials.
